Treating Periodontal Disease
Periodontal therapy is the required treatment for gum disease and surrounding alveolar bone loss, one of the most common dental problems. Periodontal disease takes on many different forms, but is usually considered to be a chronic, episodic, bacterial infection of the gums. We offer comprehensive treatment for periodontal disease, such as scaling and root planing.
Scaling and root planing is the most common and conservative form of treatment for periodontal disease. Scaling is the removal of calculus (commonly called tartar) and plaque, the bacteria laden substance that usually attaches to tooth surfaces, especially below the gum line along the root surface. Because plaque is more likely to stick to rough surfaces, the root surface is smoothed down in a process called root planing. Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smoothes root surface irregularities.
